Artiest : Stuart Dempster

Beschrijving : Master trombonist Stuart Dempster was born in 1936 in Berkeley, California. He studied at San Francisco State College and served from 1962 to 1966 as principal trombone with the Oakland Symphony under Gerhard Samuel. During these years he also taught at the San Francisco Conservatory and California State College. In 1968, Dempster joined the faculty of the University of Washington, Seattle, where he has remained for over thirty years. In 1973, he traveled to Australia, where he studied the Aboriginal didgeridoo as a Fulbright Scholar. Dempster was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1981. "Morning Light" and "Didjerilayover" appear on Dempster's Underground Overlays from the Cistern Chapel. On June 18, 1994, Dempster returned to the empty two million gallon, 186-foot-diameter cistern were he recorded Deep Listening with Pauline Oliveros and Panaiotis six years earlier. This time around, Dempster was accompanied by nine of his current and former trombone students. The group took full advantage of the extraordinary 45-second natural reverb and made beautiful, spine-tingling music. Noel Morrison last updated:08/24/01
