Beschrijving : Offering the world a solo album can be a dangerous thing. A group's album is usually greater than the sum of the parts -- or however that saying goes. Thus when an individual artist creates an album on his or her own, it's often fractionally as interesting. Fortunately, Jason Noble (aka Per Mission) has talent and vision to spare, as he has constructed something fantastically dark and mesmerizing on his debut solo album A Ritual Loop. A member of Rachel's and The Shipping News, Noble has plenty of practice constructing expansive, layered, and traveling orchestrations. Rachel's build upon eerie classical instrumentation mixing cello, viola, and piano with samples and guitar and occasional vocals. The Shipping News explores experimental sound with a traditional three-piece rock lineup of guitar, bass, and drums. With Per Mission, Noble creates a starker and even darker sound with drum loops and samples mixed with layers of keyboards, guitars, and percussion and peppered with sections of spoken word. A Ritual Loop flows as if each song is the eclectic background to a surreal film. This album could be the soundtrack to the sequel to Jacob's Ladder, if set in Jason Noble's hometown of Louisville. Intertwining, pitch-shifted spoken word vocals slowly blend and disappear as downtempo beats and vibes enter. A piano loop is decorated with obscured samples. Hypnotic and engaging, Per Mission is another great project from one of Kentucky's finest and most prolific musicians. Justin Sinkovich last updated:10/08/01
